The Brazilian Pollinators Initiative (BPI) was established in 2000 due to the efforts of the Brazilian Ministry of Environment, the University of Sao Paulo, and the Brazilian Corporation of Agricultural Research. Its core objectives keep with those of the International Initiative for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Pollinators and are to "monitor pollinator decline, its causes and its impact on pollinator services; address the lack of taxonomic information on pollinators; assess the economic value of pollination and the economic impact of the decline of pollination services; and promote the conservation, the restoration and sustainable use of pollinator diversity in agriculture as well as in related ecosystems." To date, the BPI has participated in many activities including the preparation of funding proposals; symposium and workshop sessions; publication of two books; the inclusion of the BPI in the Federal Government Multi-Year Work Program for 2004-7; the public call for projects on pollinators sustainable use; Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signings; and a survey of activities and researchers on pollinators.
The NBII Program is administered by the Biological Informatics Office of the U.S. Geological Survey
